What Is Clarity?
The Inner Story of a Diamond
Clarity refers to tiny internal features (inclusions) and surface details (blemishes) that naturally occur during a diamond’s formation. These marks are microscopic and often invisible without magnification, but they help determine how clearly light travels through the diamond.
Clarity is graded under 10x magnification using the IGI clarity scale, established by the International Gemological Institute, one of the world’s most respected diamond certifiers. The scale ranges from Flawless (FL) to Included (I3), but LUCEN BLOOM only selects from the top tier.
Clarity Gradings
- Flawless (FL)
No internal or external characteristics under 10x magnification.
Extremely rare, with absolute clarity even under close inspection.- Internally Flawless (IF)
No inclusions, only extremely minor surface blemishes.
Optically perfect, yet often indistinguishable from lower grades to the unaided eye.- Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS1–VVS2)
Inclusions so minute, they are barely visible even to trained graders under magnification.
These diamonds are completely eye-clean ; and where LUCEN BLOOM begins.
At LUCEN BLOOM, we focus on VVS2 or higher because:
- These diamonds appear flawless to the naked eye
- They balance exceptional purity with accessible pricing
- Going above VVS2 adds little visible benefit, but greatly increases cost ; which goes against the very heart of why lab-grown diamonds matter
We believe perfection is not just about reaching the top ; it’s about making beauty approachable without compromise.
What We “Don’t Offer”
LUCEN BLOOM does not offer diamonds below VVS2, because even slight inclusions (as seen in the grades below) can interrupt clarity and affect the emotional and visual resonance of a piece.
Very Slightly Included (VS1–VS2)
Inclusions visible under 10x magnification, but not typically to the naked eye.
Still beautiful ; but not to LUCEN BLOOM’s standard of optical purity.
Slightly Included (SI1–SI2)
Inclusions may be visible without magnification, reducing brilliance.
We avoid these to preserve uninterrupted sparkle.
Included (I1–I3)
Obvious inclusions affecting both clarity and structure.
Not part of our selection.
